“I’m a big fan of editing and keeping only the interesting bits in.”
— Sarah Vowell
Copyediting for Clarity and Connection
Whether you write to evoke emotion, to get your ideas into the world, or just because you are expected to as a researcher, your words are important. You’ve worked hard to create the sentences and chapters that express your thoughts.
Now it’s time for the final touch: the copyedit. Copyediting will make your writing clear, crisp, and readable, to get your ideas across smoothly.
How does copyediting work?
It all starts when you get in touch. Tell me what you’re working on: what your writing is about, who it’s for, and how long it is.
I’ll let you know how long it will take to make your writing shine, and how much it will cost. (No surprises!)
Then I’ll get to work, helping your writing flow clearly and reach your reader without any snags.
I’ll share my changes in a format that works for you. Some writers want to review all the changes I’ve made in Word’s Track Changes or a GitHub commit; others just want a polished, final manuscript.
After your copyedit is complete, I’m available to answer any questions you might have.
My specialties
My focus is on science writing, academic writing, and working with self-publishers. (But if your project doesn’t fit the description, drop me a note — if your project isn’t within my expertise, I may be able to suggest another copyeditor.)
I offer editing for works at any stage: whether your project is still in its first draft, or pretty much ready to publish, my editorial eye can improve it. It’s never too late — or too early — to enlist a copyeditor.
I have experience editing works on psychology, evolutionary biology, earth sciences, pedagogy, sociology, coaching, and climate science. I’ve edited papers, books, articles and other works. I’ve worked on:
psychology papers that explore how to get people to think differently about waste,
essays on software architecture,
a book about personal growth organized around birds as metaphors and inspiration,
and numerous other technical and academic books, articles, and papers.
I have experience working with ESL authors, first-time authors, self-publishing and independent authors, even people who aren't authors at all. I edit for your audience, whether that’s other academics, colleagues, or the general public.

Meet Your Copyeditor
Hi! I’m Amy and I’m a freelance copyeditor. My background is in math and computer science, and along the way I’ve developed interests in psychology, urban planning, education, parenting, and social justice.
I started my copyediting education with a stack of “how to” books and a lot of nerve. I moved on to the excellent training offered by Editors Canada, completing seminars on stylistic editing, proofreading, indexing, bias-aware editing, and more.
When I’m not editing, writing, or coaching, I read (of course), sing, and watch people clean things on YouTube.
